Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery

What is Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery?

Minimally invasive bunion surgery is a surgical technique that corrects the deformity of the big toe joint with smaller incisions compared to traditional open surgery. This approach utilizes specialized instruments and real-time imaging to precisely realign the bones and soft tissues of the foot, resulting in less tissue damage and a quicker recovery.

The Procedure

  1. Small Incisions: Instead of a large incision, the surgeon makes several tiny cuts (usually less than a centimeter) around the bunion area.

  2. Bone Realignment: Using specialized tools, the surgeon reshapes the bones and corrects the alignment of the big toe joint. This may involve cutting and repositioning the bone, as well as removing any excess bone growth.

  3. Fixation: Small screws are used to hold the bones in their new position. These are often designed to be left in place permanently.

  4. Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures, and the foot is bandaged.

Advantages of Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery

  1. Reduced Scarring: The smaller incisions result in minimal scarring, which is a significant cosmetic advantage for many patients.

  2. Less Pain and Swelling: Because the procedure is less invasive, patients typically experience less postoperative pain and swelling compared to traditional surgery.

  3. Faster Recovery: The recovery time is generally shorter, with many patients able to walk with the aid of a special surgical shoe or boot within a few days. Full recovery and return to normal activities can often be achieved sooner.

  4. Lower Risk of Complications: The reduced tissue disruption lowers the risk of complications such as infection, nerve damage, and prolonged stiffness.

  5. Outpatient Procedure: Minimally invasive bunion surgery is often performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can go home the same day as the surgery.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery from minimally invasive bunion surgery is typically quicker and less painful than traditional surgery, but it still requires careful attention to ensure optimal healing. Here are some key aspects of the recovery process:

  1. Immediate Post-Op Care: Patients are usually advised to use minimal weight for the first 1-2 weeks

  2. Footwear: A surgical shoe or boot is often provided to protect the foot and aid in walking during the initial recovery period.

  3. Physical Therapy: Usually not needed but some patients may benefit from physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility to the foot.

  4. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up visits with the surgeon will be scheduled to provide close attention to the healing process

  5. Gradual Return to Activities: Most patients can return to light activities within a few weeks, but high-impact activities should be avoided for several months.

Is Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery Right for You?

While minimally invasive bunion surgery offers many advantages, it may not be suitable for everyone. Patients with severe deformities or other complicating factors may require traditional surgery. It’s important to consult with a qualified foot and ankle surgeon to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific condition!
